8 Days Southern Tanzania Safari

Tanzania’s Southern Circuit is for travelers who want wilderness, space, and variety. This 8-day journey links Nyerere National Park (the new name for much of the Selous ecosystem) with Ruaha National Park—two vast protected areas known for low visitor density, dramatic scenery, and exceptional game viewing.

The experience is intentionally flexible: in Nyerere you can combine classic 4×4 game drives with boat safaris on lakes and channels, plus guided walking for a more immersive perspective. In Ruaha, the focus shifts to big game and predator action in a rugged landscape of ancient baobabs, rocky kopjes, and wide river systems—ideal for photographers.

Logistics are smooth and efficient with scheduled light aircraft flights between destinations. You spend your time in the wild—less time on the road—and enjoy premium camps that match the remoteness and exclusivity of the south.

8 Days Southern Tanzania Safari - Nyerere & Ruaha

Day 1: Arrive Dar es Salaam – Check-in & Safari Briefing

On arrival in Dar es Salaam, our team meets you for a private transfer to your city hotel. This first day is designed to be gentle and practical—ideal after international flights, and a smooth setup for your light aircraft departure into the wilderness the next morning.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax by the pool, enjoy a quiet dinner, or take a short city shoreline drive. Later, a comprehensive safari briefing covers: flight baggage guidelines for light aircraft, what to wear for walking and boating activities, camera tips for changing light on water, and how we pace game drives for the best wildlife windows.

Overnight: Serena Hotel – Dar es Salaam

Day 2: Fly to Nyerere – Afternoon Game Drive or Boat Safari

After breakfast, you transfer to the airport for your scheduled light aircraft flight into Nyerere. From the air, you’ll see the landscape open up into a vast mosaic of rivers, woodland, and floodplains—one of the reasons the south feels so wild and unhurried.

On landing, you are met and transferred into camp with game viewing along the way. After settling in and enjoying lunch, you choose your first activity based on conditions: an afternoon game drive for classic sightings, or a boat safari for a different angle on the ecosystem—watching elephants and antelope come to the water’s edge, spotting crocodiles, and photographing birdlife in warm golden light.

Return to camp for sundowners and a relaxed dinner, listening to the sounds of the bush around the lake.

Overnight: Roho ya Selous – Nyerere National Park

Day 3: Nyerere – Walking Safari + Afternoon Boat or Game Drive

Start early for a guided walking safari. Walking in Nyerere is about detail and immersion—tracking prints, learning how animals use wind and cover, identifying plants and bird calls, and understanding the smaller stories that vehicles often miss. Your guide sets a safe, comfortable pace and explains how the landscape changes across habitats.

Return to camp for brunch and downtime during the hottest hours. In the afternoon, choose another activity: a boat safari for close water-level photography, or a game drive searching for larger concentrations of plains game. With luck, you may encounter wild dog, lion, and the strong giraffe and hippo populations that make this region special.

Overnight: Roho ya Selous – Nyerere National Park

Day 4: Nyerere – Full Wilderness Day (Flexible Activities)

Today is your most flexible day in Nyerere—built around your interests. Prefer photography? We time activities for the softest light and focus on river edges, reflections, and bird colonies. Prefer big game? We prioritize longer game drives to cover different pockets of the reserve and follow fresh tracks.

You may combine a morning game drive with an afternoon boat safari, or choose a full-day game drive with a picnic to stay out longer. This pacing often delivers the best surprises—rare sightings, fresh predator tracks, or dramatic elephant interactions at the water.

Overnight: Roho ya Selous – Nyerere National Park

Day 5: Fly to Ruaha – Scenic Transfer & Afternoon Safari

After breakfast, you transfer to the airstrip for your scheduled flight to Ruaha. This change of region is a major highlight—Ruaha feels more rugged and dramatic, with ancient baobabs and granite outcrops framing wide valleys.

On arrival, you meet your team and enjoy game viewing en route to camp. After settling in and lunch, you head out again in the cooler afternoon hours. Ruaha is famed for strong predator populations and big elephant herds, plus excellent sightings of kudu and other species adapted to the drier environment.

Overnight: Jabali Ridge – Ruaha National Park

Day 6: Ruaha – Full Day Game Drive or Walking Safari + Sundowners

Rise early for a full safari day in Ruaha. You can choose a classic morning and afternoon game drive, or—if you want a deeper connection—add a guided walk. Game drives here often focus on river lines and open areas where lion, leopard, and cheetah sightings can be excellent.

A full-day option with a picnic lunch allows you to stay out longer, following wildlife movement without returning to camp mid-day. Your guide will interpret behavior and adjust strategy: tracking, waiting patiently for action, and positioning for the best light and angles.

Overnight: Jabali Ridge – Ruaha National Park

Day 7: Ruaha – Predator Focus & Optional Night Drive

Your final full day in Ruaha is ideal for a predator-focused plan. We set out early to cover key areas and follow the freshest information from guides and rangers. Morning is often best for active hunting behavior, while late afternoon can deliver dramatic light and scenes around water.

If your camp operations allow, you can add a nocturnal drive to search for the more elusive night creatures and experience Ruaha’s atmosphere after dark—an entirely different kind of safari.

Overnight: Jabali Ridge – Ruaha National Park

Day 8: Fly Back to Dar es Salaam – Departure or Beach Extension

After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam. On arrival, we assist with your onward connection—either your international departure or an extension to Zanzibar or the coast (ideal after a wilderness-focused trip).

End of Safari.
