8 Days Tanzania Great Migration Safari (June–October)

This 8-day itinerary is built around the most dramatic chapter of the Great Migration: the Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti. Between mid-June and late October, huge herds of wildebeest and zebra mass along the riverbanks, waiting—sometimes for hours, sometimes for days—before plunging into fast water where crocodiles patrol. Timing is never guaranteed, but with the right positioning, patient tracking, and enough nights in the correct zone, your odds rise significantly.

The journey begins gently in Arusha, then moves to Tarangire for elephants and baobabs, continues through Central Serengeti for resident predators, then focuses on the river crossing corridor in the north. You finish with a classic descent into the Ngorongoro Crater—one of Africa’s most wildlife-dense landscapes—before returning to Arusha/JRO.

Language policy (important): English is included. Other languages are available on request and typically range $50–$100 per guide per day depending on language and dates.

8 Days Tanzania Great Migration Safari - Mara River Crossings

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) – Transfer to Arusha

On arrival at JRO, you’ll be met by our team for a private transfer to Arusha. The drive is comfortable and scenic, and on clear days you may catch views of Mount Meru. After check-in, you’ll have time to unwind, refresh, and reset your body clock. We keep Day 1 easy—tomorrow starts the safari rhythm early.

In the evening, your guide (or our representative) reviews the full plan: what time we depart, how game drives work, what to pack in your day bag, and a quick briefing on the migration season—why river crossings can be unpredictable and how we position ourselves to maximize your chances.

Overnight: Arusha hotel/lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 2: Tarangire National Park – Full Day Game Drive (Elephants & Baobabs)

After breakfast, you drive to Tarangire—famous for its ancient baobabs, wide savannah, and some of Tanzania’s strongest elephant encounters. The Tarangire River acts like a wildlife magnet in the dry months, and even in greener periods the park remains rich with game. Your guide focuses on the river corridor and the open plains where you may see elephant families, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo.

You’ll stop for a picnic lunch at a designated viewpoint, then continue with a slow, detailed drive in the afternoon when animals begin moving again. Tarangire is also excellent for birding—raptors, hornbills, bee-eaters, and waterbirds near seasonal swamps. If you love photography, your guide will time stops for light and behavior rather than rushing through “checklist sightings.”

Overnight: Karatu / Rift Valley area lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 3: Drive to Central Serengeti – En-Route Game Viewing

Today you journey toward the Serengeti ecosystem—one of the most iconic wildlife landscapes on Earth. The route climbs through the Ngorongoro highlands before opening into endless plains. Depending on timing, you may stop at viewpoints and (optionally) cultural/interpretive points en route.

Once inside Serengeti, the transfer becomes a game drive. Your guide stays alert for big cats in the Seronera region—lions often rest near kopjes, cheetah scan the plains, and leopards can appear along riverine trees. You’ll arrive at camp/lodge, settle in, and head out again for an afternoon drive if time allows—perfect for catching golden-hour movement.

Overnight: Central Serengeti camp/lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 4: Central Serengeti – Predator Country & Endless Plains

A full Serengeti day lets you move beyond “surface-level” viewing. You’ll start early when temperatures are cool and predators are active. The central region is famous for year-round resident wildlife—meaning even outside peak crossing moments, your chances of quality sightings remain high. Your guide will track fresh signs: paw prints, bird alarms, and vehicle reports pointing to leopard or lion activity.

Expect a flexible plan: morning drive, picnic lunch, then more game viewing. If you prefer a slower pace, we can build in time to return for a hot lunch and head out again later—often the best time for dramatic light and animal movement. This day also helps “set the stage” for the north: we build a strong predator foundation first, then we chase the migration drama at the river.

Overnight: Central Serengeti camp/lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 5: Transfer to Northern Serengeti (Mara River Zone) – Migration Tracking

After breakfast, you travel north toward the Mara River corridor. This is not “dead driving”—it’s an extended game drive through changing habitats: open plains transition to rolling hills and scattered woodlands. Along the way, you may encounter elephants, giraffe, topi, and even cats using the road edges for easy movement.

By afternoon you reach the river zone. Your guide begins active migration tracking: scanning for large herd lines, listening for riverbank commotion, and checking the most promising crossing points. River crossings are not scheduled events—some days are quiet, other days explode with action. The advantage of being based in the north is simple: when the moment happens, you are already there.

Overnight: Northern Serengeti (Mara River area) camp/lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 6: Northern Serengeti – Full Day Mara River Crossings (Optional Balloon)

This is your prime “crossing day.” We start early and focus on the river systems and key crossing points. You may find herds gathering at the banks—sometimes testing the water, sometimes turning back, sometimes suddenly committing. When a crossing happens, it’s raw nature: dust, thunder of hooves, frantic movement, and crocodiles waiting below.

Optional upgrade: a Serengeti hot-air balloon safari can be arranged (seasonal availability; additional cost). Balloon mornings start before dawn and end with a bush-style breakfast. If you choose ballooning, we plan the rest of the day to still maximize river time.

Even when crossings don’t happen, the northern region remains excellent: resident lions, elephants, hippos, and dramatic landscapes make every drive worthwhile. Your guide will keep the plan fluid—if one crossing point goes quiet, we relocate to where herds are building pressure.

Overnight: Northern Serengeti (Mara River area) camp/lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 7: Morning in Serengeti – Transfer to Ngorongoro Highlands (Maasai Cultural Stop)

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning drive (either in the north or en-route south depending on wildlife movement and timing). Morning hours often deliver excellent action—predators are active and herds are moving. Then you begin your transfer toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing into cooler highlands with sweeping viewpoints.

If you’d like a cultural experience, today is the most practical time for a Maasai boma visit. You’ll learn about traditional pastoral life, homestead structure, and daily routines. The visit is respectful and guided, and we keep it optional for travelers who prefer to stay purely wildlife-focused.

Overnight: Ngorongoro / crater rim / highlands camp or lodge (as per your package selection)

Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive – Return to Arusha / Transfer to JRO

You rise early for the Ngorongoro Crater descent—one of the most wildlife-dense safari areas in Africa. In a single morning you can see lion, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena, hippo, and often elephant bulls. Your guide also searches the best zones for black rhino sightings (not guaranteed, but Ngorongoro is one of the best places to try).

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot inside the Crater, then ascend back to the rim and continue to Arusha. Timing is planned around your outbound flight—either JRO drop-off or hotel drop-off if you’re extending your trip.

End of Safari.
